Methods & application
Understand how a structure responds.
Impact modelling connects geometry and material behaviour to a defined loading event. This blog examines how a study is set up, what its outputs can show and how to communicate the limits of the model.
Define the event
Set out the impact conditions, restraints, contact interfaces and outputs of interest. Prepare a model that represents the part of the structure needed to answer the engineering question.
Build and check the model
Consider mesh detail, material data and contact definitions alongside the loading conditions. Review the model behaviour and energy histories before using a result to compare structural options.
Compare the response
Examine deformation, force histories and energy absorption across controlled design changes. Relate those comparisons to the model assumptions and available test evidence, with clear limits on the conclusions.
